Chapter 33

Knowing yourself

知人者智

知人者智,自知者明。

Knowing others is intelligence.
Knowing yourself is clarity.

胜人者有力,自胜者强。

Overcoming others is strength.
Overcoming yourself is power.

知足者富,强行者有志。

Knowing when you have enough is wealth.
Keeping to it is will.

不失其所者久,死而不亡者寿。

Not losing your place is endurance.
To die and not be forgotten is long life.

Reading it

Four couplets, each turning an outward measure inward. The move is consistent: take a word everyone uses for winning over other people and apply it to the harder, less visible contest. The last line turns outward again — and it is not about reputation. It is about whether anything you made outlives the making of it.

One thing to try

Write down the one thing about yourself you would least like said out loud. Look at it for a minute without arguing.
